North West Hit by Wave of New Business Start-ups According to infoUK
Manchester, UK – infoUK (an infoGROUP company, NASDAQ: IUSA) today announced it has released a revealing snapshot of new business start-up activity across the region. The report comes as Manchester gets ready to host Business North West the North West’s biggest ever business networking evening and business-to-business exhibition.
According to infoUK’s business database, containing information on more than 2.2 million UK businesses, September 2009 saw a 5.33% increase in the number of new company formations in the North West.
So far this year, 31,021 new start-ups have been created in the North West which is an increase of 1.16% during the same time last year. In comparison the rest of England and Wales, excluding the North West, has seen an overall fall, on average, of 1.12%.
infoUK, the Manchester-based business data company and sponsor of Business North West’s networking evening on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 5:30-7.00pm also found that:
• An additional 186 new start-ups were created in the North West in September 2009 compared to September 2008, bringing the total in September to 3,676 or a 5.33% increase
• Compared to the previous month, August 2009, September has seen an increase of 15.96% in the number of new start-ups created in the North West. When compared to September 2007 figures, September 2009 has seen a 19.97% increase with 612 more new company formations
• September is the first natural peak in 2009 in the number of new start-ups registered in the North West. While March saw the highest number of new company formations this year, this is traditionally due to the new financial year requirements, indicating that September is showing the first natural peak of the year
• According to infoUK’s business database there are 255,715 businesses in the North West. As a result, new start-ups created in 2009 now make up 12% of the North West business population.
Richard Lloyd, General Manager of infoUK, said, “An increase in the number of company formations is great news for the North West. New start-ups are the lifeblood of our economy and their growth, coupled with record bookings for this year’s Business North West sends out a really positive message for the region.
“Businesses that continue to market themselves, network, engage and win new customers are more profitable in the long run, and the wave of new business start-ups in the region creates lots of new sales and marketing opportunities. In turn, many new start-ups tend to rely on a small number of customers, which can put them in a very vulnerable position if they ever lose a client. That’s why it’s vital that businesses make the most of events like Business North West and low cost marketing techniques, such as e-mail marketing to secure new customers.”
