Business Yorkshire - Yorkshire Weathers Fall in New Business Start-ups as it Gears up for Business Yorkshire
Yorkshire has seen a significant decline in the number of new business start-ups created in the region during October. The new business figures released by infoUK (an infoGROUP company, NASDAQ: IUSA), the business-to-business data and marketing company, show that the number of new businesses created in Yorkshire fell to their lowest level in October.
infoUK revealed its latest new business figures as it gears up to attend, exhibit at and sponsor Business Yorkshire – the region’s largest business-to-business exhibition, conference and networking event. The two day free Business Yorkshire event for SMEs runs from 25-26 November at Doncaster Racecourse.
According to infoUK’s business database, containing information on more than 2.2 million UK businesses, October recorded the lowest number of new start-ups created so far during 2009. Compared to the previous month, there has been a fall of 19.2% in the number of new company formations in Yorkshire.
Richard Lloyd, general manager of infoUK, said: “Although October did see a big fall in the number of start-ups created, the figures do actually mask a more positive picture. So far this year, 16,650 new start-ups have been created in Yorkshire – an increase of 1.6% compared to the same time last year. This compares favourably to the rest of England and Wales, excluding Yorkshire, which has seen a fall of 1.5% but Yorkshire businesses can in no way be complacent.
“The recent decline in new start-up activity underpins the need for existing SMEs to be actively engaging with potential new customers and taking advantage of opportunities such as the free Business Yorkshire event to meet other businesses and market themselves.”
infoUK’s new business start-up figures for Yorkshire reveal that:
• October 2009 saw the lowest number of start-ups created in Yorkshire compared to any other month in 2009
• 209 fewer new start-ups were created in Yorkshire in October 2009 compared to October 2008, bringing the total in October to 1,457, a decline of 12.5%
• Compared to the previous month, September, October has seen a fall of 19.2% with 347 fewer new company formations
• In the year to date, 16,650 new start-ups have been created in Yorkshire – an increase of 255 or 1.6% compared to 2008
• Across all other regions, excluding Yorkshire, there has been a decline in the number of new start-ups in the year to date. 280,558 new start-ups have been recorded in the year to date compared to 284,808 in 2008 – a fall of 4,250 or 1.5%
• March saw the highest number of new company formations in Yorkshire this year. This is traditionally due to the new financial year requirements, indicating that September in Yorkshire was the peak for new start-ups with 1,804.
Richard Lloyd concludes: “The fact that a record number of businesses have already signed-up to attend Business Yorkshire is a great sign that Yorkshire businesses are coming out fighting to win new business. We also hope that this level of activity will also send a message to people thinking of starting a business that events like Business Yorkshire provide one of the best and most cost effective ways to meet future customers and learn top tips on how to market your business.”
Rachel Elnaugh, entrepreneur and ex Dragon from Dragons Den has been confirmed as the keynote speaker for Business Yorkshire which runs from 25-26 November 2009 at Doncaster Racecourse. Other speakers during the free two day event include Brad Burton, founder of 4Networking, Steve McCann from Hallmark, and Andrew Barke from Google.
Business Yorkshire’s networking evening – the biggest in the region- takes place on Wednesday 25 November from 5.30-7.00pm in the infoUK sponsored Network Café.
